Can't Believed I Missed This

Being the huge Jeff Buckley fan that I consider myself to be (rightfully said, if you ask me), I thought I knew all about him. And to be accurate, I still feel confident that I do, as far as his music goes.

But as I was watching "Candy," a tragic love story starring the late Heath Ledger and Abby Cornish (that came out in 2006), I recognized a song that played throughout the film. I didn't recognize the music, but the lyrics were very familiar.

"Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me
Sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you

Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks,
For you sing, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow:
O my heart, O my heart shies from the sorrow"

I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am troubled at the tide:
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with Death my bride?
Hear me sing, "Swim to me, Swim to me, Let me enfold you:
Here I am, Here I am, Waiting to hold you."

And now I'm obsessed with this song. Seriously, the lyrics.

It's an amazing song and I'm so glad that I found it again.

I first heard it in some trance mix I used to own (it was a long time ago, I promise). But I remember the song then, captivating me. And now I find out that The Cocteau Twins did a remake of it in the 80s, which was then used to make a remix using Elizabeth Fraser's vocals for the trance version.
I knew listening to all that ridiculous trance and those remixes would come in handy one day. I used to be obsessed with this song. I was 18, in my car, wind pushing my hair around, singing "waiting to hooOOOoooOOOoooOOOoold you."

And who did the original, you ask?

I never knew it would come back like this, allowing me to see what it was really about and forcing me to love the Buckleys even more. So I've decided to learn it and if, one magical day, I decide to play out, you bet your ass that I'll be covering this.

Full circle, I tell you. But I just like to think of it as Jeff Buckley trying to contact me.

It kind of makes sense that the song was used in a trance mix, as the original version is itself such a trance-inducing performance. Such a great song.
