But here is another fact: I live in Austin, Texas and I go out. A lot. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. Too much, even.
But I have to be honest with myself and admit that right now is right now, not yesterday or tomorrow. And although I've grown accustomed to planning things out, being somewhat of an adult now, I've learned to appreciate the "right now" moments. And those are chock-filled with great music, amazing friends, badass parties, significant conversations, laughs, looking people right into their eyes and them looking right back, dancing, and so much more. I feel greatly blessed to be able to have the experiences I've had and shouldn't be so...well...fucking lame. Nas had it right, sleep is the enemy of death, yo.
So here's my breakdown for 2008:
Top albums/releases for me would have to be anything from (The Great) White (Hope) Denim, or just White Denim. Maybe technically it wasn't Fleet Foxes, but they're from Austin and I haven't or won't hear anyone else who sounds like them. All their garage-noise-funky sounds kept me wanting more. And I appreciate that kind of unconventionality. They're all amazing musicians and put on even better shows, plus they were one of the first bands I saw when I moved back home in February, so I've got a little (big) soft spot for them.
I also adored Bon Iver's Emma Forever album. Every song pricked me at first, like a needle. But between the vocals and melodies and lyrics, I was bleeding myself dry with them. And it hurt, in that very open and fulfilling way. I felt painfully satisfied after listening to it for a while.
And now I'm indestructible.
And my obsession with Lykke Li grew after seeing a few of her videos and hearing her album, Youth Novels. I can't really explain it too much except that her voice and Ivanka Trump-lookin' face are captivating. Plus I can't think of too many other songstresses who can dance like her. She'll be here on February 19th at Antone's and so will I.
And so I've come to the conclusion that 2009 will not only be a much better year, but I'll pretty much own it.
